Did you receive a text message asking for payment information related to your taxes in Virginia? It’s a scam.
Scammers recently posed as a Virginia revenue agency in a text message and urged recipients to provide payment information via a link, claiming their tax refund would be permanently void if they didn’t take action. Clicking that link and providing information could result in your personal information being stolen.
Virginia Tax will not ask for personal information or demand payment through a text message.
Here are some tips to avoid falling for a text scam:
- Don’t click on any links in, or respond to, unexpected or suspicious texts.
- Report and delete unwanted text messages. Review the U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) resources for more information.
- Check to see if the text message is legitimate. Not sure if it’s really us? Give us a call.
