Pay a bill

Received a bill in the mail from us? If you need to pay a tax bill (also called a notice of assessment), choose from the following options. See Bill FAQs below for any bill questions.

Can’t pay in full now? Set up a payment plan to avoid additional penalties and interest.

Pay online directly from your bank account (free)

Pay from your checking or savings account.

  1. Log in to QuickPay using your 5-digit bill number and your Social Security Number (or Virginia Tax account number for businesses)
  2. Have your bank routing and account numbers ready.

Credit or debit card (additional fee)

We use Paymentus to process credit and debit card payments. 

For individual income tax bills, choose Individual Bill Payments. For business tax bills, choose Business Bill Payments

Have your 5-digit bill number and Virginia Tax account number (SSN for individuals) ready.  

Check or money order    

  1. Make your check or money order payable to: Virginia Department of Taxation.
  2. Write your 5-digit bill number and your Virginia Tax account number (SSN or FEIN) in the memo line. 
  3. Mail your payment to the appropriate address:

Bill FAQs

Why did I get a bill? 

If you owed taxes when you filed your return but didn’t pay them, or didn’t pay them in full, we send you a bill for the amount you owe and any applicable penalties and interest. You have 30 days to pay or respond to the bill before additional penalties and interest accrue.   

What happens if I ignore my bill? 

Don’t ignore your bill. If you don't pay or respond to the bill within 30 days, we may begin collection activity such as wage liens and bank liens. If you're having trouble paying the full amount, you should contact us at 804.367.8045 as soon as possible – there may be options. 

What if I can’t pay my bill? 

If you can’t pay the full amount now, you have options. 

What if I didn’t pay my taxes by the filing deadline, but don’t have a bill from Virginia Tax yet?

What if I think my bill is incorrect? 

You have the right to challenge any bill or notice you disagree with.  

  • You can request an informal review by calling Customer Service. We can resolve many matters over the phone.   
  • If we can’t resolve the issue over the phone, you can present your case in writing. Please explain why you disagree with the assessment, and include any documentation needed to support your position, including tax returns, receipts, and tax payments. Use the address provided on your bill, or mail your request to:

To give us time to review an inquiry and stop any collection actions, you must notify us that you are disputing the amount within 30 days from the date the bill was issued. 

Can I file an appeal? 

If you’re not satisfied with the results of your informal review, you have the right to file an appeal within 90 days of the date of assessment. An appeal is a request for a ruling from the Tax Commissioner, and is best for resolving questions of law related to audit bills or adjustments.

Payment Fee - Returned Payments: If your financial institution does not honor your payment to us, we may impose a $35 fee (Va. Code § 2.2-614.1). This fee is in addition to any other penalties and interest you may owe.
